Yukon Canoeing Expeditions

Preparations for an expedition, especially when solo requires rather more planning than what at first meets the eye. Logistics, equipment, maps, food, medical supplies, insurance, informing local authorities. The list is endless and every aspect needs to be checked and rechecked if the expedition is to be a success.

During my extensive research it came to my attention that 1997 was to be the centenary of the biggest Gold Rush in history, The Klondike Gold Rush.

An idea struck me -what if I could follow in the footsteps of the so-called Gold Rush "stampeders". Start my journey as they did from Seattle, take the Alaska marine highway ferry through the Inside Passage, hike over the coastal mountain range and notorious Chilkoot Pass and then canoe the Yukon River, not just to the Gold fields surrounding Dawson City, but to the very mouth of the river and beyond.

A quick change of plan was required - I would no longer be flying to Anchorage but instead to Seattle.

On May 26 that is exactly what I did.
